back to carabiners

quickdraws quickdraws:

Quick-draws are handy for connecting things together or tagging heavy items. In the past they've also been an
inexpensive way to get good carabiners, although they've gotten considerably more expensive recently.

The loose carabiner (with the straight gate) is intended to connect to the tether point (ie the rock bolt, when
climbing a cliff) and the captive carabiner (with the curved gate) is where you attach your personal ropes and
other hardware. Since (steel) bolt eyelets can dig burrs into a carabiner, avoid using these backwards so your
ropes aren't subject to damage from burrs on the bolt carabiner. Also the rope carabiner is "captive" which
makes it safer to be attaching and detaching ropes from, as there's no chance of the carabiner departing from
the dog bone strap. These principles work equally well with tower climbing and tethering gear while working.

Although you may be tempted to loop a lift rope through a quickdraw for load lifting, the rope will encounter
significant friction around a carabiner under load, so add a pulley for that. An M-type pulley will require
you to be able to thread the rope through the frame of the pulley, but they include a swivel. Micro-pulleys
on the other hand can "capture" a rope in the middle, but lack a swivel.
